  3. Notes and Details for NT SMTP Gateway Setup:

  5. 1. You need to upgrade the NT postoffice using Microsoft's 
  6. "PostOffice Upgrade for Microsoft Windows for Workgroups"
  7. Part No. 0684499V320. Available from Datacomm Warehouse for about $340.
  8. This includes mail remote and AT+T mail connection as well.

  10. You want to be carefull when doing the upgrade to make sure that
  11. the Postoffice name and other details are what you want, the default
  12. values are probably no good.
  13.  
  14. Also, you need to make sure your netowrk name is less than 9 characters.
  15. My original domain name was FROSTBITE-FALLS and this just didn't work.

  17. 2. Once you've upgraded the postoffice, you then simply run the install.exe
  18. that came with the gateway. This installs the services and sets up a
  19. couple of config files under \WGPO\smtp. The config files are explained
  20. in the readme with the gateway.

  22. 3. After installing the gateway, you need to start the SMTP gateway 
  23. service under the control panel->services setup. If you want logging
  24. set the startup parameters to something like -Ci -Lacsya -MR -MS.
  25. This will give you lots of nice logging.

  27. 4. To send mail out to the great information cowpath (aka internet), you
  28. will need to add an address in your own address book. Click on the
  29. card file, then select SMTP. this will allow you to enter an alias and
  30. an internet style address.

  32. 5. To do any postoffice administration, you will need a DOS !! machine
  33. that has the postoffice drive connected as m:, with another network drive
  34. connected to the postoffice as well. You HAVE to run the admin.exe from a
  35. DOS machine, you can't run it under NT DOS shell, nor can you use the
  36. Postoffice manager that is under the mail menu.

  41. I forgot one thing... It "leaks" memory and you will have to stop and restart
  42. it, probably once a day. The best way to do that is with an "at" job.
